| Sequeira's game-winning hit pulls Oilers closer to first place Fri, 18 Jul 2008 13:24:10 ADT P.J. Sequeira lifted the Peninsula Oilers to victory Thursday night, and in the process made the pennant race in the Alaska Baseball League a whole lot more exciting. Sequeira’s go-ahead RBI double in the seventh inning gave the Oilers a 3-2 victory at Coral Seymour Park in Kenai over the Athletes in Action Fire. The victory, coupled with the league-leading Anchorage Glacier Pilots’ 6-1 loss to the Fairbanks Goldpanners at Mulcahy Stadium, moved the Oilers within three games of first place. Peninsula (24-10 overall, 12-10 ABL) nearly wasted a 2-0 lead it had built in the first inning before needing Sequeira’s heroics to break through, helping the Oilers complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Fire (11-17, 8-15). Middle reliever Brandon Berl pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the season. Berl lowered his already sick ERA to 0.27, having allowed just one earned run in 32.2 innings. Closer Erik Draxton pitched the ninth to collect his seventh save and match teammate Seth Harvey for the team lead. The Oilers banged out eight hits against Fire starter Eric Hillenbrand, who suffered the loss. Hillenbrand entered the game having given up just nine hits in 19.2 innings. In Anchorage, the Goldpanners did all their scoring in the first inning to win easily, benefiting from five walks, two singles, one error and one wild pitch in that opening frame. Nick Ciolli, Jeremy Gillan and Ryan Scama each had two hits and scored a run for Fairbanks (15-13, 11-12). That was more than enough support for starter Andrew Clauson, who pitched a complete-game seven-hitter. He struck out nine batters and walked four. He wiggled off a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth to finish it. For the Pilots (25-9, 16-8), Todd Sebeck and Luc Yoder collected two hits apiece and Brian Harr drove in the lone run. Anchorage pitchers Zac Beltz and Conor Spink – who both grew up locally – combined to toss 8.2 innings of shutout relief. Every ABL team will be in action at Mulcahy Stadium over the next three days for the annual ABL/MLB Scout Showcase. The event features three games (1 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m.) today, Saturday and Sunday. |
